This is a checklist of about 670 records on British & Irish folk plays, collected by Thomas Fairman Ordish, and deposited, with the Archives of the Folklore Society, in the Special Collections of University College London Library. (Files for Cornwall, Essex & Northamptonshire seem to be now missing.) Xerox copies of the collection are in the Archives of the National Centre for English Cultural Tradition (NATCECT) at the University of Sheffield and the Ron Shuttleworth Collection. The late Alex Helm edited and enlarged a typescript copy in 4 Vols., and deposited copies in the Archives of the Folklore Society and the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library. (In the latter, Vols.1 & 3 are now missing.) He also transcribed much of the collection as Vols.5-8 of his own Collection. A handlist was originally compiled in 1983 at the University of Sheffield by the late Reg Payne, Stephen Roud and Paul Smith (now Memorial University of Newfoundland). However, because resources were limited, many of the bibliographic citations are incomplete or inaccurate. The Traditional Drama Research Group (TDRG) hopes to undertake a project to complete and correct this checklist. |
