MYSTERY HISTORY: THE ORIGINS OF BRITISH MUMMERS' PLAYS

This article reviews facts and opinions on the origin of British folk plays. The author agrees with the point of view that the available evidence does not support the theory that the plays originated in some pagan fertility ritual. He then suggests alternative histories for the plays, particularly covering the influence of pantomime and the idea that the plays were added to pre-existing customs.
