Entry to an essay competition on old village life at Whatton, Notts. On page 2 it states;

"The Pancake Bell rung at eleven O'clock on Shrove Tuesday was discontinued during World War I."

"An old mummers play was acted in the houses on Plough Monday. This has died out."
