Folk Plays - Winter 2004/2005 - Middleton Mummers
Middleton Mummers, North Yorkshire, England on the 19th Dec.2004
During the group's five year history, eight actors have performed the play. They all come from the village of Cowling, North Yorkshire with five coming from the adjacent hamlet of Middleton. Other actors not appearing this year are Catherine Uren and Caroline Bell. The combat play that was taken from the internet and last performed in Nottinghamshire in the 1930's. The script is adapted each year, to incorporate a topical figure from world or national news. In previous years these have been Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. This year we were lucky to have a cabinet minister. We only perform before Christmas and only in the three local villages of Sutton-in-Craven, Crosshills and Cowling. From now on we intend performing on the Sunday prior to Christmas Eve. There are three or four rehearsals in a member's house plus a dress rehearsal. The play takes about 15 minutes and the accent is on fun for both actors and audience - the more barracking the better.
